CHAPTER

SIXTEEN

North of Willow Creek, South Carolina

“I’m having second thoughts about not entering the camp,” Gyles said. They had been driving north for two hours. Much of it not speaking once they had made the decision to go to the hospital in Alexander. Most of the drive was uneventful, the roads clear, and no contact with civilians or the infected. “There still could have been survivors inside.”

Root sighed, “You have to decide, bro. Either we think Howard’s group raided the camp and took prisoners to Alexander or not. Howard doesn’t leave anyone behind. And then, if someone else attacked, why the hell are we going to the hospital?” He grunted. “Regardless, that place was overrun and elbow deep with ho. If there are survivors inside that camp, then there is nothing the five of us can do from the inside of this truck. And we sure as hell wouldn’t be able to get out of it to lend assistance.”

Gyles sighed, “Still, I’d feel a hell of a lot better right now if we’d at least looked. For evidence, even.”

The truck slowed at a northwest intersection. Abe put the vehicle in park and cut the engine. “Forget about the camp, we have another decision to make.”

“What’s that?” Eddie asked looking over. The man looked as if he’d been sleeping the last hour. His Kevlar helmet was on the floor, and he was rubbing his temples. “Why’d you stop?”

“Alexander is a decent sized town. There are a lot of infected in there.”

“So?” Eddie asked.

Abe shook his head, “It’ll be dark soon, and we can’t get into the hospital after dark. And we do not have a safe house in Alexander. As a matter of fact, we don’t have a safe house anywhere around here. The plan was to spend a night at the Habitat, remember?”

Gyles leaned forward, “Tell me about this hospital? The area around it, the guards?”

The vehicle got quiet. Gyles looked left and right, “Have you all been there before?”

Abe put his hands on the wheel, “We’ve made supply runs there on occasion, but I’ve never seen more than a loading dock. They don’t let anyone in or out of the hospital that isn’t assigned there. If we go there, we’ll have problems.”

Sighing, Gyles asked, “So, what are our options?”

“There is a place up here. A hotel—creepy—but I know Howard’s crew won’t be there.”

“Why is that?” Gyles asked.

“Some bad business went down there. There was a group living there. They kind of fortified it and were doing their own thing separate of the FEMA camps. Howard’s people offered them assistance and relocation into one of the FEMA camps. They declined and there was a major disagreement of some sort. Bad things happened, and well… The place is empty now, and Howard marked the entire hotel off limits pending an investigation.”

“Investigation?” Root laughed. “They aren’t investigating anything. Howard marked the place off-limits hoping leadership back in the mountain never finds out that his team massacred a bunch of survivors.”

“Massacred?” Gyles held up a hand, “But that’s exactly what you are saying they did back at the Habitat.
