CHAPTER
SIXTEEN
North of Willow Creek, South Carolina
âIâm having second thoughts about not entering the camp,â Gyles said. They had been driving north for two hours. Much of it not speaking once they had made the decision to go to the hospital in Alexander. Most of the drive was uneventful, the roads clear, and no contact with civilians or the infected. âThere still could have been survivors inside.â
Root sighed, âYou have to decide, bro. Either we think Howardâs group raided the camp and took prisoners to Alexander or not. Howard doesnât leave anyone behind. And then, if someone else attacked, why the hell are we going to the hospital?â He grunted. âRegardless, that place was overrun and elbow deep with ho. If there are survivors inside that camp, then there is nothing the five of us can do from the inside of this truck. And we sure as hell wouldnât be able to get out of it to lend assistance.â
Gyles sighed, âStill, Iâd feel a hell of a lot better right now if weâd at least looked. For evidence, even.â
The truck slowed at a northwest intersection. Abe put the vehicle in park and cut the engine. âForget about the camp, we have another decision to make.â
âWhatâs that?â Eddie asked looking over. The man looked as if heâd been sleeping the last hour. His Kevlar helmet was on the floor, and he was rubbing his temples. âWhyâd you stop?â
âAlexander is a decent sized town. There are a lot of infected in there.â
âSo?â Eddie asked.
Abe shook his head, âItâll be dark soon, and we canât get into the hospital after dark. And we do not have a safe house in Alexander. As a matter of fact, we donât have a safe house anywhere around here. The plan was to spend a night at the Habitat, remember?â
Gyles leaned forward, âTell me about this hospital? The area around it, the guards?â
The vehicle got quiet. Gyles looked left and right, âHave you all been there before?â
Abe put his hands on the wheel, âWeâve made supply runs there on occasion, but Iâve never seen more than a loading dock. They donât let anyone in or out of the hospital that isnât assigned there. If we go there, weâll have problems.â
Sighing, Gyles asked, âSo, what are our options?â
âThere is a place up here. A hotelâcreepyâbut I know Howardâs crew wonât be there.â
âWhy is that?â Gyles asked.
âSome bad business went down there. There was a group living there. They kind of fortified it and were doing their own thing separate of the FEMA camps. Howardâs people offered them assistance and relocation into one of the FEMA camps. They declined and there was a major disagreement of some sort. Bad things happened, and well⦠The place is empty now, and Howard marked the entire hotel off limits pending an investigation.â
âInvestigation?â Root laughed. âThey arenât investigating anything. Howard marked the place off-limits hoping leadership back in the mountain never finds out that his team massacred a bunch of survivors.â
âMassacred?â Gyles held up a hand, âBut thatâs exactly what you are saying they did back at the Habitat.
